How do I convert Overworld coordinates to Nether coordinates?

Divide your Overworld X and Z coordinates by 8 to get the corresponding Nether coordinates. The Y coordinate stays the same. For example, Overworld (800, 64, 1600) becomes Nether (100, 64, 200).

Why does my Nether portal link to the wrong place?

Portals link to the nearest existing portal within 128 blocks (in the Nether) of the calculated destination. If another portal is closer, it will link there instead. Use our Portal Linking Validator to check if your portal placement will work.

How far apart should Nether portals be?

How Nether Portals Work

The Nether dimension is 8x smaller than the Overworld. This means traveling 1 block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld - making Nether highways incredibly efficient for long-distance travel.

Conversion Formula:

Overworld → Nether: X ÷ 8, Z ÷ 8
Nether → Overworld: X × 8, Z × 8
Y coordinate: Stays the same (but limited in Nether)

Tip: Build Nether portals at Y=15 to avoid lava lakes and stay above the lava sea level (Y=31 in the Nether).
