RWK Quest Optimization Guide: Binary Search Strategy
Card quests in RaceWarKingdoms reward you with free poker card chances that stack up over time - but finding the target monster on a 300 by 300 coordinate map can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack.
The binary search strategy turns that haystack into a systematic process. Instead of wandering randomly, you cut the search area in half with every track attempt, finding your target in 8 to 9 attempts instead of dozens.
Track Quests Automatically
Record directions, calculate next positions, and detect the killbox with our step-by-step Quest Tracker.
What Are Card Quests?
Card quests are repeatable missions where you hunt a specific monster hidden somewhere on the map. To find it, you use the Shrine Keeper's tracking command, which gives you a compass direction (North, South, East, or West) pointing toward the target. Each completed quest gives you an increasing chance to play poker cards for free in combat.
Black Card Quest
Target: Nightmare Fly
Item: Goldblum Goo
Reward: Free black card chance
Red Card Quest
Target: Dragonling Zombie
Item: Deformed Wing
Reward: Free red card chance
Cumulative rewards
Each quest completion adds to your free card chance, but with diminishing returns. The first completion gives 20%, the second adds roughly 13%, and each subsequent completion adds progressively less. The practical maximum is around 60% after many completions.
The Binary Search Strategy
Binary search is a classic algorithm that finds a target by repeatedly halving the search space. Applied to RWK quests, it means you start in the center of the 300 by 300 map and let each directional clue eliminate half the remaining area.
Start at the Center
Move to coordinates (150, 150) - the center of the map. Use /m Shrine Keeper: track to get your first direction. This single command eliminates half the map immediately.
Move to the Midpoint
Based on the direction you received, move halfway between your current position and the edge of the remaining search area. For example, if the Shrine Keeper says North, move to (150, 225) - halfway between 150 and 299.
Track Again and Repeat
Use the track command at your new position. Each response further narrows the search area. After the 5-minute cooldown, record the direction and move to the next calculated midpoint. The Quest Tracker handles all the math for you.
Detect the Killbox
After about 8 attempts, your search area shrinks to a small zone. When you start getting contradictory directions (North then South on the same axis within a few units), you have entered the 9 by 9 killbox. The tracker detects this automatically and shows you where to start killing.
Why Binary Search Is Optimal
A 300 by 300 map has 90,000 possible coordinates. Random searching could take hundreds of attempts. Binary search guarantees you find the killbox in about 8 to 9 track attempts because each attempt cuts the search space in half. With a 5-minute cooldown between tracks, that is roughly 40 to 45 minutes from start to killbox detection.
Understanding the Killbox
The killbox is the critical zone around your target. Once you enter it, the rules change - and if you are not prepared, you will waste time and resources.
Killbox Mechanics
Important: Once inside the killbox, the Shrine Keeper gives random directions instead of accurate ones. The Quest Tracker detects this by identifying conflicting directions on the same axis (for example, North at X=100 then South at X=105). Stop tracking once the killbox is detected - additional attempts waste ash and time.
The Monster Kill Grid
After the killbox is detected, the Quest Tracker switches to a 9 by 9 kill grid centered on the approximate killbox location. This is how you systematically find and kill your target monster.
How the Kill Grid Works
- The tracker generates 81 positions in a 9 by 9 grid with 1-unit spacing around the estimated killbox center
- Travel to each position and kill one monster of the quest target type (Nightmare Fly or Dragonling Zombie)
- Mark each position as checked in the tracker. If you complete the quest at a position, you have found your target
- Work through the positions systematically. The target is guaranteed to be within the killbox area
Optimizing Your Quest Runs
Managing Costs and Cooldowns
Each quest run has costs that add up over multiple completions. Planning ahead saves resources and time.
- Each track attempt costs 10 ash with a 5-minute cooldown. Budget around 80 to 90 ash per complete quest run (8 to 9 tracks)
- Starting a quest costs 999 Kingdom runes or 5,000 ash plus the quest item. Stock up on quest items before starting a session
- Use the cooldown time productively - plan your next move, check the tracker's suggested position, or work on other in-game tasks
Efficient Tracking Tips
Small improvements in tracking discipline save significant time across multiple quest completions.
- Always record your position and direction immediately. The Quest Tracker saves your history, but a missed entry means an inaccurate search area
- Trust the tracker's suggested next position. It calculates the optimal midpoint based on all your previous directions
- If you accidentally enter a wrong direction, use the remove button in the track history to delete it before it skews your search area
Using the Quest Tracker
Our Quest Tracker automates the binary search math and killbox detection so you can focus on moving and tracking instead of calculating coordinates.
Automatic Next Position
Enter your current coordinates and the direction from the Shrine Keeper. The tracker instantly calculates your optimal next position using the binary search algorithm. No manual math needed.
Killbox Detection
The tracker monitors your direction history for conflicting readings. When it detects you have entered the killbox, it displays a warning, shows your last reliable position, and estimates the killbox center.
Kill Grid System
Once the killbox is located, the tracker generates a 9 by 9 grid of positions to check. Click each position to mark it as completed, and track your progress toward finding the target monster.
Common Quest Mistakes
These mistakes cost time, ash, and patience. Avoiding them makes every quest run smoother.
Tracking inside the killbox
Once the killbox is detected, further track attempts give random directions. Every attempt after detection wastes 10 ash and 5 minutes of cooldown for useless information. Switch to the kill grid immediately.
Not recording directions accurately
A single wrong direction entry throws off the entire search area calculation. Always double-check the Shrine Keeper's response before entering it in the tracker. If you make a mistake, remove the entry immediately.
Skipping the kill grid
Some players try to guess the exact target position after killbox detection instead of systematically checking the 9 by 9 grid. The grid has 81 positions but the systematic approach guarantees you find the target. Guessing rarely saves time.
Pro tip: Keep a running tally of your quest completions to track your cumulative free card chance. After about 5 completions you reach roughly 46%, and around 8 completions gets you past 55%. The returns diminish after that, so decide how many runs are worth your time.
